New! A5.5 250wpc integrated amplifier

achieves even higher standards than the outgoing model.

The original A5 integrated amplifier has been on the market for three-and-a-half years. During that time it has earned a considerable reputation for superb sound quality, excellent build quality high reliability and consistency. It is still selling well today. The new A5.5 integrated has been designed to, offer improved sonic performance and give extra facilities which were not generally available five years ago when the original A5 was designed.

The very latest Sanken output transistors

The A5.5 uses the very latest generation of Sanken output devices. These eclipse all other similar devices in terms of linearity and current delivery. They allow the drive circuitry to deliver even more information and detail because of their improved performance.

Optically coupled feedback/protection circuit

The A5.5 is fitted with our latest generation of super-fast optical feedback protection circuitry which isolates the main circuit from the feedback element. It offers greatly improved sonic performance as well as dramatically improved protection under short circuit and overdrive conditions.

Interestingly, the speed of the optically coupled components allows the output devices to deliver more peak current into loudspeaker loads than previously, whilst affording far greater protection under duress.

Channel matching

On the outgoing A5, a tiny proportion of customers have not been satisfied with the volume balance at extremely low levels (almost inaudible) but we decided to address this. The new volume control electronic configuration now gives virtually perfect channel balance matching (+0.5dB) right the way down to the beginning of the volume control track. By any rational standard the volume balance, right the way down to the beginning of the track, is virtually perfect.

USB input

In line with all our latest products, the A5.5 sports a USB input which allows direct input from computers.

External access to the control electronics

During the years since the original A5’s design, the market has moved on and, particularly in America, multi-room and custom install is commonplace. To be able to include the A5.5 in such systems we have included a jack socket on the back of the amplifier which allows external control systems direct access to the A5.5’s control system for either modulated or unmodulated RC5 code. Most of the competition who have similar facilities have access for only one or the other. The A5.5 allows either modulated or unmodulated, thus increasing its system install flexibility.

Aesthetics

The original A5 was born at about the same time as the BMW 5 series. Back then angles and facets were the height of fashion. Things have changed since then and so has the A5.5. Although it’s unquestionably a Musical Fidelity product, the lines are softer, the front panel has a soft curve and the looks are generally more subtle. The knob has an ultra refined art deco look.

Conclusions

With the A5.5 we have brought the 5 series right up-to-date and hopefully a bit ahead of the market. It produces a fabulous, effortless, uncoloured sound with the unruffled ease that is the hallmark of true high end.
