tonkontroller

Well, the Aries Cerat electronics does not have tone control neither but every element allows to play with the bias.  By increasing or decreasing those, there is the possibility to tune the system sound to one's liking, more organic, more neutral, more dynamic, more closed,.... This can be done at the DAC or phono stage, preamp and power amp stages.  It allows also to obtain a coherent system voicing independent of the source being used!

Last but not least, the crossover of each horn speaker has a knob that allows to increase or decrease the midrange gain by steps of 1 dB.  Also the tweeter, that is installed on a magnetic suspension can be turned more towards or away from the listener to tune the amount of direct radiation.

So, just a whole other way to tune the system not only to one's room but also to your personal preference depending on the type of music you listen most to.

Nowadays, even the most expensive speakers are made as one robust package that cannot be altered, but this is very counterintuitive as we all know the huge influence a room and personal taste has on how a speaker and system behind should be sounding in our listening room!

I have two sets of reproducing cards and three different stabilizer cards ie voltage regulation for the audio section.

The first set of repro cards is based on the original architecture but with much higher-grade components: new capacitors, metal film resistors, most recent generation of transistors, special JFET, etc.

Original card prior upgrade:

After the upgrade:

L1040082_zpswzup8t21.jpg

As the upgrades were performed Gradually, I can confirm there is a significant improvement Compared to the original cards: improved dynamics, reduced noise floor and much faster transients. In That respect, my technician Claims That the special military JFET is playing a key role:

L1040085_zps5ayife7l.jpg

The second set of repro cards is heavily modified by MTSL. A picture with the MTSL card (top) and the card modified by my tech (bottom)

The MTSL card is actually «Warmer» and less analytical.

My tech upgraded the original stabilizer card During the initial overhaul so I can not confirm Whether there were audible improvements.

Before overhaul:

05% 20Stabilizer% 20PCB% 20Avant_zpsgpbftb7

After overhaul:

06% 20Stabilizer% 20PCB% 20Apregraves_zpsqu

I got the MTSL stabilizer card and there were significant sonic improvements Compared to the modified Studer card:

When looking at the MTSL card, my technician told me That he Could design something even better and I put him on the challenge. He developed a brand new design with impressive measurements:

L1040122_zpsqv9rvtck.jpg

2_zpsjtnd7eau.jpg

After many trials, I came to the conclusion That MTSL repro cards work best with the MTSL stabilizer card and the Same Applies to the set from my technician.

I have an audiophile / warmer set (MTSL) and a more analytical / detailed set (my tech's). Do I have a preference? In absolute terms, I would say That I have a slight bias for my tech's cards though the MTSL sets is wonderful on harpsichord.

Swapping cards is done in a breeze.

There are still few upgrades in the pipeline:

My technician is Currently working on a Improving the signal path in the vumeter bridge with the replacement of the switches by relays, new potentiometer, new circuit boards, etc.

I have improved tape sensor from MTSL That my tech will install. It is supposed to Improve the Wow and Flutter.

Finally, the balanced outputs will be modified by having the transformers being removed and Replaced by a Class A design.

These upgrades are all interesting, especially the repro cards, the vumeter-bridge and to exchange the trafos.

Did you discuss to upgrade the power supply with your tech?

Jag var i kontakt med Todor Dimitrov för 5 år sedan (10 april 2013):

Repro electronics: I can do a serious upgrade on it and the results will be substantial. MTSL is specialised in Studer upgrades and we have top recording studios among our clients. I will need you to send me the 2 repro cards (last 2 cards on the right, at the card bay below) plus the stabilizer card (first card on the left, in the same bay) Look at page 80 of the service manual, I put a link to it below. I will return them upgraded in about 1 month, then you just plug and play. This will cost euro 850. If interested,  will give more detail on the modifications - in general, they follow the Studer design but use much better passive and active components than available at the time and shorten the signal path, by deplying better but less components. Key coupling caps are replaced from electrolytics to custom-made film capacitors - a major change, not available at the time of original production.

All the capacitors of the power supply have been upgraded. The voltage regulation of the tape transport section has been upgraded During The intial overhaul. My tech was convinced That the best improvement would be obtained with his custom-made regulation card for the audio section.

Wow...! Congratulations. :41:

Tenor has been a wet dream since I first saw and heard them when I worked in Montreal. Jim Fairhead had an office in the same house as " my shop" and was seen there quite often. Very nice guy and fantastic products.

Here's an image from Montreal 2008 at the Son & Image festival.

I also see novelties between the shelves... I'm coming...:outdoor:But not today. I will spend one week in Germany including a long weekend for concerts in Gewandthaus lead by Herbert Blomstedt and Bach organ concert in Thomaskirche.

That's interesting. Stacore, have to check it up.

Btw, yesterday and today I've listened to a record which I think you'd appreciate. It's four trumpet concertos by four contemporary composers (early 18th century), with music recovered from Fulda in central Germany. The recording is performed by Academy Of St Martin-in-the-Fields with the founding conductor and with Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger as soloist. He's world famous in my town and a frequent player at Malmö Live concert hall. Whenever they want to plan something special, they call Håkan.

I never really listened to trumpet concertos, but this one is very nice. Especially the Stamitz concerto, which is reconstructed by Alan Boustead and cadence by Hardenberger.

The beautiful tenor 175 S stereo amp. Not as mighty as the Krell mono blocks but highly musical on solo, chamber and small orchestral pieces not forgetting the vocal ones. It was collecting dust at someone's home ... well someone who has a full Aries Cerat systems : D

I really like the sound of Tenor! One of my favorite when it comes to voicing besides Absolare. Awesome!

Concratulations!
