Antill:Corroboree. Villa-Lobos: The Little Train of the Caipira, Ginastera: Estancia; Panambi.
Sir Eugene Goossens, London Symphony Orchestra. Bert Whyte (prod. & eng.).
DSD version: David Baker (prod.); Tracy Martinson (eng.).

This is the recording that has blown the socks off everyone for whom I have played it. And interestingly
enough, it’s a straight transfer from the Everest original three-channel tapes, done without alteration of
the originals, electronic or otherwise. Which means we have just three channels up front, no surround,
and no low-frequency effects (or ambience) channel.
The Antill and Ginastera pieces were recorded on half-inch masters by Bert Whyte at Walthamstow
Assembly Hall in London in the late 1950s, the Villa-Lobos on 35mm magnetic film, whose use Everest
pioneered. And so we find, particularly in the case of the Antill, a recording at least 45 years old and a
sonic hair-raiser so spectacular you’d think the tapes were made yesterday. We also can hear, quite
clearly, the difference between the sound of tape and 35mm. To these ears, the 35mm sound is etched
and forward—not bad, mind you, but considerably different from the top-octave response of tape,
which I prefer, and so will you when you grab up this disc.
Classic records har gett ut SDBR-3003 (inte 35mm!) på
vinyl och som
DVD-A men man kanske skall hålla fingrarna borta från den sista enligt
denna recension av SACD-utgåvan:

Because of its audiophile reputation Classic Records reissued it as part of their
small 96K DVD series, but something went very wrong - the sonics were hissy
and distorted. Nowhere near the quality of the original LP. Now it's done right
on this SACD, and it's not just due to the additional channel in the middle.
- Jag vet faktiskt inte om det går att få tag på SACD-skivan mer då
vanguardclassics i januari 2003 blev uppköpta av Omega Records Group

Classic records återutgåvor finns fortfarande att få tag på....
